The widow of slain NYPD Sgt. Paul Tuozzolo spoke with News 12 about the pain of her loss and how she finds strength, nearly one year after her husband made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
"I think that there's sometimes a misconception that I'm doing OK," Lisa Tuozzolo says. But she says she battles on for their two children.
On Nov. 4, 2016, Sgt. Tuozzolo and a fellow officer, Lt. Emanuel Kwo, were shot at around 3 p.m. Lisa Tuozzolo rushed to the hospital, where she was told that her husband had been killed.
Since Sgt. Tuozzolo's death, a street has been renamed after him, a park has been dedicated in his honor and neighbors have hung blue ribbons throughout the neighborhood. A thin blue line has also been painted in the roadway stretching to the Tuozzolos’ home in his honor.
Lt. Kwo, who was shot in the leg, created "Patches for Paul." The patches have turned into a movement that thousands of officers and celebrities have joined.
Lisa Tuozzolo says she finds solace in visiting local precincts and learning more about what her husband did.
"I find comfort in talking to people about Paul and his sacrifices," Lisa says. "That's where I find strength."
Tuozzolo says if she could have one more moment with her husband she would make sure that he knew how much she loved him and appreciated him.
