Three suspects were arrested and being charged for their alleged roles in a drive-by shooting in Yonkers that injured four people on Thursday.
Yonkers police arrested 21-year-old Andre McKenzie, of Greenwich Connecticut; 18-year-old Tyrese White, of Mount Vernon; and an unidentified 17-year-old male suspect, also from Mount Vernon – who is believed to be the alleged shooter.
Police say McKenzie was the driver in Thursday's shooting. Officials also say White is currently wanted by the NYPD on a bench warrant for a prior robbery charge and the Mount Vernon Police Department for a prior assault charge.
Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller says all three suspects are being charged with second-degree attempted murder, felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Investigators believe that the motive for the shooting is gang-related and that the shooter was possibly targeting rival members.
Robert Carter is the program director of SNUG, a community-based organization founded in Mount Vernon that aims to stop gun violence through intervention, mediation and community outreach. He says that while it saddens him to hear about yet another tragic shooting, more must done in the community to prevent violence before it starts.
"We can't wait for the violence to come to your doorstep, then you want to get involved. You have to go out there and meet the violence where it is, in the street before it gets to your doorstep, because no one wants that call that it's their child,” Carter says.
The four victims, three men and woman who range from ages 23 to 31, are expected to survive.
