Two men could spend the rest of their lives in prison for killing an Army veteran who they mistakenly thought started a barroom brawl.

The judge called Carlos Velez a "savage, cold-blooded killer," a career criminal and a menace to society before ordering him imprisoned for 40 years to life on charges that included murder and attempted murder for killing Jason Allwood in 2015.

Prosecutors say his accomplice, Luis Charbonier, played a lesser role. The judge sentenced him to 15 years to life in prison.

The slaying happened after Velez's brother got beat up in a bar fight on White Plains Road. 

According to investigators, all Allwood did was break up the brawl.

But a bar patron mistakenly told Velez that Allwood had been the aggressor, and the two defendants hunted him down. 

Velez shot him to death on Murdock Avenue.
