New York City is celebrating the 50-year anniversary of hip-hop this year, and the Universal Hip-Hop Museum is offering a new exhibit that takes visitors through what many call the Golden Era.

The new exhibit brings you through the years 1986 to 1990, during a time when hip-hop started its ascension to the mainstream in the United States and across the globe. Rocky Bucano, president and chairman of the board at the museum, says this year marks a special milestone.

“[At first] it was more about having fun at parties and going to different jams in neighborhoods and out in the parks,” said Bucano. “Now, here we are 50 years later, and hip-hop is considered the most influential music and culture in the entire world.”

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. and on Sundays from 1-6:30 p.m. at Bronx Terminal Market.
