An 80-year-old crossing guard was killed, and two children were hospitalized after being hit by a car Monday afternoon in Woodland Park.

The crossing guard was helping two juveniles cross the street around 3:35 p.m. at the intersection of McBride and Lackawanna avenues when the incident took place, according to a joint statement from Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Woodland Park Chief of Police Luigi DeLuca.

The crossing guard, identified by the Woodland Park mayor as Jean Schultz, was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The two children were also hospitalized and are in stable condition, according to the prosecutor. The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene.

In a statement posted on social media, Mayor Tracy Kallert said the borough is "heartbroken" over the death of the beloved crossing guard. The mayor said she died "while faithfully performing her duties."

"For many years, Jean served our community with care, warmth, and unwavering dedication. She was more than a crossing guard—she was a bright and reassuring presence for generations of children and families," the mayor said. "Jean was a kind and gentle soul who lit up every time she saw the kids coming, greeting them with a smile and ensuring their safety each and every day."

The mayor said the loss is one that is "deeply felt through the entire community." Officials remembered Schultz as someone of warmth and compassion.

"Woodland Park stands united in sorrow as we honor Jean’s life, her service, and the countless lives she touched," the mayor said.

The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office is continuing to investigate the crash and asks anyone with additional information to contact the tips line at 1-877-370-PCPO or tips@passaiccountynj.org. Tips can also be submitted anonymously on the prosecutor's website.
