According to the NYPD, the accident happened at around 2:30 a.m. at the corner of West 231st Street and Kingsbridge Avenue.
Witnesses say the victim, 23-year-old Luis Iona, was riding in the back seat of a livery cab with his friend down West 231st Street when the cab pulled over to the side of the street because the victim seemed to not be feeling well.
A spokesman for the MTA told News 12 The Bronx that the victim, who appeared to be drunk, got out of the cab and ended up in the path of an MTA bus. He was struck and killed.
The victim's family says that they are heartbroken and shocked by Iona's sudden death. They say Iona was killed just steps away from his home.
Iona's father says his son was out celebrating a new job venture the night he was killed. He says Iona studied media and communications, and was looking to become a reporter or to work behind the scenes.
Police have made no arrests in the case. The investigation is still ongoing.
