313ds agoThe Long Island Air Force Association presented medals on Saturday to Vietnam veterans who served in all branches of the military.
Several veterans were able to appear in person to receive the Vietnam 50th Anniversary Commemorative Medal in a ceremony held at the American Air Power Museum in Farmingdale. The event had been cancelled the past two years due to COVID.
"I feel very proud and honored to be recognized with my brothers and be welcomed home," said Army veteran Anthony Carella.
Local officials, as well as the honorees' families, were on hand for the event.
"Being able to celebrate him here and have him receive a medal for everything he's done and he's been through – I’m just thankful," said Beth Mellilo, daughter of veteran John Melillo.
One of the reasons why AAPM was chosen for the ceremony was the backdrop of a fighter-bomber plane that was used in combat in the Vietnam War.
“These guys all served…and this is the one time we can say to them, we honor you," said Fred DiFabio, Long Island Air Force Association president.
The Long Island Air Force Association also announced they will honor female veterans at the Cradle of Aviation in October. Those honorees will be presented with the Women's Military Service Award.
