New upgrades are on the way for a NYCHA complex in Soundview.
Residents of the Bronx River Addition say they are excited about renovations set to begin in the coming months.
Norma Saunders, president of the tenant association at Bronx River Houses, outlined some of the current issues facing the residents, including peeling paint, mold in apartments and plumbing problems.
"The paint is peeling, and people’s apartments have mold. There’s a lack of plastering, and the pipes are in bad condition. This is all building up, but at the same time, it shouldn’t be left aside," Saunders said.
Saunders, who represents many elderly residents, said these problems have long plagued the complex but will soon be addressed.
"We’re looking at renovations both inside and outside the buildings, including brand new piping and a new boiler system," Saunders added.
These improvements come a year after the Bronx River Addition was voted into the Trust program, which is managed by a government agency responsible for overseeing the repair and renovation of public housing.
"NYCHA claimed they didn’t have the funding to fix up the buildings and bring them up to par, so we had a vote. Residents had to choose between the PACT or Trust program, and the Trust program won," Saunders explained.
As part of the renovations, residents will be temporarily relocated while work is done to remove lead and mold. The Trust program will cover the costs of relocation.
"During the removal of lead and mold, residents will be moved at no cost to them. Once the work is completed, which should take about nine months, they’ll be able to return to their apartments," Saunders said.
The work is scheduled to begin later this year, with full contracting starting in 2026.
Saunders added that residents will have the opportunity to choose how they want their kitchens and bathrooms to be renovated, giving them a say in the final outcome of their homes.
