Thanks for being with us for another edition of Ask the Borough President here on News 12, the Bronx with Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson. If you have a question, the number to dial right now is 718-861-6800, and I do believe we have some callers on the line, so we'll kick off and start with Charlize, who has dialed in from Fordham tonight. Charlize, thank you for the call and what's your question for the borough president? Charlize, are you with us on the line? Are you there? Yes, great to hear from you, Charlize. What's your question for the BP? My question is, what can I do to help my community? I live in the Fordham section of the Bronx, and it's been so much gun violence over here since I lived here. I lived here for 35 years. I know at least 20 kids under the age of 25 that were murdered in just this area here. What can I do? I'm willing to volunteer my time to get to these kids because there's no way in the world a 12 or 13 year old should have a gun, should speak about a gun. No, no, no, no, I grew up in the Bronx all of my life. I've never had to be afraid to stay outside. We used to break night. We didn't worry about getting shot. So again, what can I do? I can do something. I appreciate the sentiment from Charlize and I wish and hope that more Bronxites wanna come together to help and personally address the issue that is so amazing. Thank you for that question and I appreciate it because we all have a role to play. These are our children, these are our communities, and we cannot lose our kids to the criminal justice system. So what I offer to you is a commitment to not only uh work with you but to make sure that we're. All working together because when we work together we're better together a couple of suggestions being involved in a local community board finding out within your neighborhood what resources are there today where are the community centers where are the recreation centers, where are the neighborhood schools, right? Finding out a way to get involved, um, as a community leader and volunteering your time. Many of our not for profits are struggling they need assistance they need the extra hands because they're serving children families better. Older adults, people with disabilities, and they often need that additional support. um I think it starts from somewhere if you live in an apartment building, you have a civic association, let's create a tenants association in our buildings. Let's mobilize tenants and say you know what, we all live here we all raise our families why not become a united front because we are the louder voices that we want our communities to see. We don't want to just show up at the scene of an accident. Or a crime scene, but we should show up all the time. It's already May. The weather is warm. What is going to happen when millions of our children, 1.1, are out of school and not everyone has access to our program. So what I would love to see is us organizing on the ground and we can start at a local level in our building. We can start with building captains, getting TA's together, and we can start organizing and working with community boards, elected officials. It's like it's so encouraging to know that people want to be involved because we all have a responsibility we're not closing our blinds, closing our eyes, saying that's not me, that's not my child where is the village? Where is the village that it took to raise us? We are now that village to raise the next generation and yes I know it's different it's different from when I was a child or my mom was a child. I get it. It's not the same anymore. People don't like when you chastise their kids. I got it. I understand because it is very dangerous sometimes, but we can't stop trying is my message. We can never stop trying when it comes to saving these kids. A 12 or 13 or 14 year old picking up a gun is intentional about picking it up, about accessing it, taking it, and using it. There is something wrong. The mindset that says I need to protect myself from my neighborhood and get a gun is troubling. And to me there are other ways and there are other answers and that's what we have to do we all have to be credible messengers we don't have to work for a non for profit to be a credible messenger by virtue of being in your community, being active, serving your neighborhood, serving your families and friends, volunteering your time, it makes you a credible messenger. So I just need everyone to buy. Into this work because it is public service it is neighbors helping neighbors taking care of our community so that our children can live they can have safe neighborhoods as well as our adults as well, right? We all wanna be safe and I wanna make sure that there are outlets for that so I would love to talk more about specifics in the Fordham community because. I think it's something that's worthy to be discussed and worthy to continue the discussions a great reminder of all of the opportunities that do exist to get involved and lend your voice to the change that we want to see. I want to get to another caller that we have on the line. Darryl has dialed in from Soundview this evening. Darryl, thanks so much for the call and go ahead and ask your question when you're ready. Good evening, Ms. Gibson. I was just wanting, good evening. I was wondering because As a young lady said, we were responsible in our communities to hold up for what children did, what we did back in the day. A neighbor would see you, they would chastise you. Can the parents be held responsible for these kids who are using guns? Mm, an interesting thought and that's probably crossed the minds of many in the aftermath of what we've seen I'm sure I've had constituents come up to me about parenting classes, about supporting our parents with empowerment and enrichment opportunities. I will say that we have family enrichment centers, FECs we have. Several in the Bronx they are overseen by ACS Administrative for Children's Services, and they are an outlet to help support families to help clients you're, you don't necessarily have to have an ACS active case or the ACS involved, but it's in the community in Hunts Point in Soundview. The concourse area we have to expand on FECs and we have to make sure there are outlets, but the laws are different. I understand. Uh, we did have a case recently of a seven year old unfortunately they got access to a weapon inside the home, um, and I know that there was an arrest made of the parent. I mean that in itself is kind of contained, but outside of that there are no like laws that will, you know, go after parents in that way unless there is an allegation that a parent is involved. Um, and that it has to go its course of the investigation and the court, uh, process. The hope is that there are resources in those enrichment centers that families can access and we want to get to the bottom of this of why they're engaging in violence in the first place. We don't want to have a punitive hand. Understandable. Let's, uh, we're gonna take a quick break here on Ask the borough president, but we're getting back to your questions right after this. Welcome back to Ask the borough president with Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson, and we've reached the point in the evening to look ahead to next month and the health tip that comes with it. What are we looking forward to in June? So we're looking forward to June as Men's Health Awareness Month. We want to make sure our husbands, fathers, uncles, godfathers, all of our men are healthy. Uh, many of them are less likely to seek medical care than women, which can lead to so many delays in diagnosis and treatment of serious health. Conditions, uh, men face unique health challenges including higher rates of heart disease, cancer, so we wanna encourage all of our men to take ownership of their health. We just learned former President Joe Biden was diagnosed with prostate cancer, um, and so we wanna be very mindful of early screening detection. I do a lot on cancer screening. Uh, we have dedicated conversations on men's health with Metro Plus Health and health and hospitals, and we also have a fatherhood initiative so we bring fathers and say. Go to the doctor. We're taking you to the doctor. We're not taking no for an answer, and I understand as someone who didn't always prioritize my health, it's really hard because you're very busy. I would be in the doctor's office like, um, OK, I have a press conference. Are we almost done? Like, literally, but like, yeah, that's how life works, right? You can't do that. So I'm just telling all of our men, men of the Bronx, we need you to take care of your health so that you can be good to your family, your children, your loved ones, and your community. Such an important message to send and a good reminder to our guys out there. You gotta take care of yourselves as well as your loved ones too. Also this week we are honoring our veterans and service members. It is veterans and Service members Week. What resources are available for our vets here in the Bronx and how else can we support those who've served and given so much for us in our country? We love our veterans and as you know, November is Veterans Appreciation Month. Um, we have services in our office. We're working with the Department of Veteran Services. Commissioner James Hendon, we had a great veterans luncheon for Bronx Week. Uh, we are always memorializing our veterans past and present, celebrating them, and the military families Gold Star, Blue Star families. Uh, we have to do more. There are too many veterans that are unsheltered and need affordable housing. We have to do more for health care, mental health, wrap around services, workforce development. My uncle is a Vietnam War veteran, so I wanna recognize all of our veterans from World War 1, World War 2, Korean War. Vietnam War, uh, and really all of our military families we honor you this weekend. This week we're just gonna amplify their voices. Yeah, a week is never enough, but it's nice to know they've got a week and then a month to look forward to later on in the year Memorial Day all of the celebrations to come. Thanks for staying with us for this edition of Ask the Borough President here on News 12 with Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson. Safety has really emerged as a theme of the conversation this evening, and I want to stay in that same space but kind of shift gears a little bit because we have uh watched several really disturbing attacks happen at our bodegas over the last several weeks, everything from employees being held at gunpoint, knife point. People dressing up as NYPD officers in order to rob a store over in Brooklyn on the heels of all of that violence, there was an announcement that 500 bodegas will now be equipped with panic buttons, which is something that advocates have been long calling for. What kind of impact do you hope that has? Do you think that will have once it is implemented? It is an assurance that we are prioritizing. Our bodegas, our bodegueros, and all of our workers that are working hard, uh, they are our neighborhood shops. They are our safe spaces where we go. We know the owners, they know us and working with, you know, UBA United Bodegas Association, Rodamez Rodriguez, Mayor Eric Adams made an announcement in the Bronx. When you look at these videos, it's disgusting to see how people are jumping over counters and attacking, assaulting the ones that. Had the fake NYPD jackets on like what are we doing in this society and I understand, I get it, uh, they need to be protected so the panic button $1.6 million of investment is going to have a direct access to 911, the coordination with the NYPD so that there's a faster response time, making sure that when those calls coming in through the panic button, the 911 call taker will automatically know that's a. In our city and so that should prioritize it on a higher level. The hope is is to have this rolled out, you know, once the budget is adopted in late June before July 1st. I am thankful for that. I wanna thank the mayor. I wanna thank Ramez. I wanna thank all of our bodegueros, uh, who have been crying out for this for a while, um, and this is real money. It's tangible because we also know that a lot of our bodegas, they're not rich, they can't afford the fancy security systems. The cameras, right, often times when there is an act of violence, the cameras are not working they're in poor condition and you hear that from NYPD when you try to go and capture eyewitness testimony which are cameras, um, so I'm glad that this is happening. It's a long overdue and I wanna make sure that of course the Bronx will be prioritized because the selection will be based on violent crime, the number of incidents, robberies that we've had, and assaults, um, we wanna protect our bodega workers. They are public. Servants, uh, they are essential workers. They were open during the pandemic when many were closed, and we should do our part to protect them. We can't just say it with words, but this infusion says it with action. And on the topic of bodegas, not only do we want them to be safe community spaces, but we also want them to have some healthy options, and I know that your office announced a new initiative last week that aims to ensure just that. Can you elaborate a little bit? Absolutely. So it's bringing fresh affordable food options to. Bronx Bodegas, uh, with the Bodega Community Leadership Bronx Health Reach, um, it is the Bodega and Small Business group as well as the Collective Fair Kitchen and Institute for Family Health and Fresh Healthy Food Initiative. I was there. We went in Hunts Point. There were 9 bodegas that are a part of this initiative, and let me tell you, they have mango stuffed empanadas. They have Caribbean fusion, Latin fusion, and it's all healthy and like it tastes really good, folks, and what I like is that again. It's our component, not 62. We're not 62 out of all counties when it comes to good healthy outcomes. So we have a campaign, not 62 campaign for a healthier Bronx. Bronx Health Reach has been doing its work. Charmaine Ruddock and her team for a long time and working with Frank Marte and working with all of our bodegas, the Bodega Association. We're starting with 9 in the South Bronx where we have the highest rates of asthma, heart disease, obesity, and then I look to. Expand like I am very, very determined to lift up families and create healthier communities. We have to do that by accessing healthy food. Where do we do that? Bodegas. We have bodegas everywhere. Everyone's got the corners all right if they're a part of this conversation as a real partner, when you go to your local bodega, you can get healthy food. Healthy food should not be inaccessible. It should be affordable. It should be accessible, and it should be available to everyone. And what better way to do that than this important part. Partnership that focuses on health and wellness, healthy food choices so that ultimately we can live healthier lifestyles. I am so excited about this because this is just the beginning and it's based on a grant from the New York Health Foundation, so great, it's a grant, not a loan, and we want more because if you see the success that we're going to have with 9 bodegas in the Hunts Point South Bronx community, imagine what we can do across the Bronx. So stay tuned. It's gonna be great to look forward to. Hispanic food. I love it and all grab and go at the local bodega. You have no excuse. We talk about food deserts all the time, and this aims to eliminate that even better. I was gonna say in these days, especially, yes, we had some of that in the news. Caribbean quite yummy, so a whole lot of stuff for you to explore the next time you head over to one of those Hunts Point bodegas. Let's get back to some callers. I believe we have Frank from Soundview on the line. Frank, thanks for the call tonight and what's your question? Oh yeah, my question is, I like to uh Uh, I'd like to call and thank, uh, Ms. Gibson for the work she's doing because every place I appear, she seems to be there and she seems to make an improvement everywhere. You love some well wishes from Frank. Yes, more work to go, Frank. Thank you for your support and we need your help. I need you to be a part of this work, credible messenger, validator, whatever community you live, we wanna make it the very best because the Bronx deserves this. We've been left behind for far too long and it's not acceptable. I don't accept the Bronx leading and everything challenging. I want the Bronx leading everything good and we absolutely can do that if we work together. We may not always agree, but we want the same things. We want clean streets safe streets. We want great lighting, we want good schools, we want clean parks, we want jobs we want economic development, generational wealth, we want pathways to the middle class. We want real affordable housing, home ownership we want to deal with climate change and reducing our carbon footprint, getting as many trucks off the street as we can like we talk about this so consistently and it's a part of a very. Big ambitious agenda that makes sure that the Bronx is moving in the right direction. We're a global, uh, tourist destination, the birthplace of hip hop, the home of South Side, the Greensboro of Pella Bay Park. We have Orchard Beach. We have beautiful places in the Bronx. Why do we always have to live by the past? The past should not define us, but rather how hard we work today, our hard working immigrant families, our businesses. More business owners, everyone is doing this work and we're all doing it creatively and we're doing it very intentionally. I say it takes a village to echo what you said earlier today, so it's good to know that there's work being done and thanks to Frank for recognizing it. Uh, you mentioned streets and I believe we have a call about just that from Nora from Norwood. Nora, thanks so much for your call tonight and what's your question for the borough president? Uh yes, I'm calling in regards to having speed bumps put in my block because it's all kind of the day and night that they're racing through the block and I'm afraid somebody's gonna get killed out here. I've tried everything. I wrote to the city. I did everything, DOT. Nobody ever did nothing. Nora, I'm gonna ask a follow-up that I think the BP is probably going to, to want to know about. Where specifically in Norwood are you talking about? It's um Decatur and 211. OK. Just to highlight the specific area for you there, what are your thoughts on adding different traffic features in light of, uh, speeding in Nora's community and then other responding to other tragic occurrences because we've seen quite a few car crashes claim the lives of Bronx sites over the past few months. Reckless driving, car racing, car speeding, uh, unacceptable. These are our shared streets we all have to share. We never want pedestrians, cyclists, uh, everyday residents. Victims of traffic violence, it's real and we've lost far too many like Coach D. We lost Coach D from the Bronx Buccaneers, uh, to reckless driving late at night, not acceptable. So a couple of things, uh, the community board, community board 7, we want to reach out to them to find out what they have already submitted in terms of traffic calming measures, speed bumps, uh, all point stop sign, traffic lights, everything you can think of flashing yellow. We have lots of options at DOT. I wanna find out. What was already done for that area, that intersection Community board 7 again great partner 52 precinct uh in terms of enforcement traffic when it comes to certain areas where you have high volumes of vehicle traffic, the car racing that's happening, I want to know what time of day, whether it's morning, afternoon, evening, weekend. I mean there's lots of frequency we call it peak versus off peak, right? And we look at everything we monitor traffic, we monitor everything that's happening. On our streets and DOT will make a determination on the measure that is best suited for that particular area um so we will look into it we will get more information to find out what has already been submitted and obviously not a problem to submit new requests for speed bumps but definitely please keep calling 311. Uh also you can call our office elected officials, the community board, like we're all outlets to ultimately deal with the issue, but I tell people you have to call if one person is. Calling 50 times, right? It's not necessarily is a priority, but if 100 people call one time, it makes a difference and some people don't like to call 311. You don't have to leave your information just give us the details and we will follow up, but we do wanna make sure that as much traffic calming measures to slow traffic down, reckless driving, we can't accept that and then sometimes you know people have suspended licenses. They have no license they have multiple infractions like that's not acceptable. It's not acceptable so I wanna make sure we do better and create safer streets for all of our families working with organizations like Transportation Alternatives, Families for Safe Streets. They help guide me in my work so that I'm a better borough president and I understand what has been done and what can be done. It's good to know though that even though it is a complicated process and there are many layers to it, it really all. Starts Nora with raising your own voice. We're glad to have brought the issue to your attention here and hopefully now you're inspired to go to your community board and your other local elected officials and kind of raise the alarm on this issue alongside your neighbors like the BP said power in numbers on this. Welcome back to Ask the borough president with Bronx BP Vanessa Gibson. The calls just keep on coming, so we're gonna get to another caller right now. We've got Ty from Mott Haven on the line. Ty, thanks for the call and what's your question tonight? Hi, good evening. Um. I just wanted to know what are we doing to combat the theft of food stamps or SNAP benefits. Yeah this was uh an issue that we really saw escalating towards the end of last year where people were having their benefits stolen right out of the card. Yes, I remember that we had a wave of it happening like late last year, uh, and each of the calls that comes into my office and my ombudsman unit we handle it with HRA, um, it's the, you know, it's the fraud unit it's theft, um, theft of basically the benefits that you're entitled to um, I don't know. I have to check with the team to see if we received like another wave of. Calls it could be isolated but I feel like everything happens for a reason when we see patterns and trends but again we work with the city agencies to do our best to not only ensure that the resident gets their benefits back but it's probably part of a larger issue and this is when it comes to what guidelines in place to reduce theft, uh, as well as making sure that people are able to get their benefits back in an expedited way. Um, not acceptable. I remember that late last year, and I, I didn't know that again if there's another surge I have to look into it and talk to the staff and then, you know, probably have a conversation with HRA commissioner with Molly Park to find out what's going on in the world, but I think that again things are happening for a reason and with so many families struggling it's unfortunate that they are also being victims of of fraud and theft, yeah, to show up at the cash. think that you're good to go and find out you have nothing on the card is obviously a moment that no one wants to find themselves in. So yeah, we'll definitely connect you to Ty to learn more about that. I want to get to a question that we got on social media. We had a user on X post a question and it reads, Crotona Park is the central park and prospect park of the Bronx. We love that title. However, it comes with a question how can we get the lake cleaned of the. Green algae sludge that will form once it gets warm. This seems to be something that uh comes in waves with the summer. It does, and there are many efforts. I've talked to Commissioner Aponte many times because the amphitheater right by the lake is home to a lot of events. We have Pride in June and July. We have the Crotona Park Jams concerts, uh, with Grandmaster Caz and Melly Bell. We have. Lots of summer stage. That's what summer stage in Crotona Park. We have a lot of activity and of course we have Old Timer's Day, the first Sunday of August we have thousands of people in Crotona Park. So I will talk to the commissioner and the parks department in the borough to find out what the plan is. Obviously the park staff do great work. Uh, the park manager there at Crotona is very much aware, uh, Ms. Phoebus, and we will make sure that there's a plan of action because I have. Heard this before. I've seen it with my own eyes. I know it's been a challenge, but Parks has, uh, made a lot of efforts to clean it up. But again every season you just have to do a little bit more. So you know we wanna make sure that it's being done and that there is a plan in place. So we'll have a conversation with the borough commissioner. Good to put it on the radar sooner rather than later. Yeah, we're talking about some quality of life issues. Crotona Park, we know is a hub for a lot of people, especially during the summer months. It gets really busy over the weekends. Uh, and with that sometimes the party lasts a little late into the night. The noise gets a little loud, and I know that the state comptroller just did an audit of 311 complaints, and I believe the Bronx led in terms of the most noise complaints. I know that's something that we have talked about here in communities like Woodlawn, Ferry Point Park. What efforts. Underway to address that, especially as we head into the warmer months where we tend to see those cases on the rise. That is a good question and I think we've already started to see it. Uh, the Woodlawn community is now getting better nights of sleep because we had a long Chandler Recreation Center opposite Woodlawn Cemetery every weekend there were large groups of individuals coming into the community. With speakers and vehicles and parties all hours of the night we all love a good party but not at 2 a.m. and not at 3 a.m. when there were working class people that have to go to work and just want a decent night of sleep living in New York City in itself just with the noise that we all experience as New Yorkers, we know that but then I think there were added measures also that just caused even more disruption. So the special ops team, the NYPD, the local precinct, a lot of enforcement in that area, a lot of ticketing and to, uh, of vehicles and, you know, confiscating speakers, and then we also get a lot of concerns around the large park. So yes, Pelham Bay, Ferry Point, Crotona, Claremont, Frant Siegel, Joyce Kilmer, Bums Dand Park. I know them all because every year we experience the same thing and again people love to have a good time. You just have to again be considerate of your neighbors, clean up after yourself when it comes to garden. Bitch and trash because on Mondays the parks department has to go in and do a lot more because of all the weekend events and just based on the the trash you see you could tell what type of party it was like oh my goodness folks, I need everybody to be part of this. We will always support sanitation parks the budget we'll make sure we do everything we can to support them, but we also need everyone to be a part of this like the uh caller called in about what we can do. Everyone, we wanna take care of our parks and make sure that there is. Clean as possible we also wanna reduce the noise um so when I saw the report I said oh goodness, I kinda know where it is throughout the community, but we will have a plan of action again we don't wanna go in with the heavy hand of enforcement, but we do wanna tell individuals and you know park goers that you have to be respectful of the park rules parks do close at a certain time. We need you to be respectful of that. So between NYPD and parks they were joint operations with the PEP offices and NYPD where they go and close parks. Try to um just diminish the crowds that are there. Yeah, no, this is everyone's call to action to clean up after yourselves and you know keep the partying to the normal hours of the day minimum real quick, you mentioned the budget and in the state budget, I know we're talking city, but in the state budget that was finally passed, inflation refund checks that people get to look forward to in the fall. What difference do you think that could make here in the Bronx? People could get anywhere from $150 to $400 in those checks, right? I think they will. Start issuing them this October in the fall. I think it's allowing families to have a little bit of a leg up and to, uh, spend money and repurpose that back into the community so it's good because they're able to buy whatever they want, whether it's food, clothing, just to get by, help towards rent. I mean families are struggling and we wanna help them, so thank you, Governor Kathy Hochle and all of our legislative leaders for including the inflation reduction in the ultimate budget, as we always say, every little bit helps. Peters' VA Hospital in Kingsbridge from 18 p.m. to 3 p.m. Then we're gonna celebrate Pride that same day, Thursday, June 12th, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Bronx Brewery House at 8:56 East 136th Street. In the South Bronx and we have Juneteenth folks with the New York Botanical Garden on Saturday, June 14th at the New York Botanical Garden from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. It's gonna be a wonderful event, so we're celebrating Pride, Female veterans, Juneteenth and the Puerto Rico flag. I was gonna say we've got a lot of causes covered in all of the June events. So many people getting a lot of love throughout the month of June. Speaking of a lot of love, we just came off of Bronx Week. I have to ask what some of the highlights were for you. Because you were doing a lot of work over those 13 days. I did a lot. Uh, we are just so grateful to BXCDC Bronx Tourism in my office, 13 days of all things Bronx, uh, because we are unique, it's 13 days. Uh, we started May 5th through May 18th. We honored veterans, centenarians. We had a health fair, silent disco, everything, but I think the best part was the parade. If you see these young people cheerleader steppers, the divine 9 organizations, health care groups just walking, marching, stepping down, marshal. Parkway like this is what the Bronx is all about. Our kids are doing great work and we want to amplify them and let them know that they are generations of future leaders and nothing can ever stop them. So Bronx Week, we had a great time. Thank you to everyone for joining us. We'll see you next year for an even bigger and better Bronx Week celebration.
