During the COVID-19 pandemic, classical music grew immensely in popularity. The Nielsen Music mid-year report found that the audio streams of the genre were up almost 5% in 2020 compared to 2019. Local arts groups in our borough are now bringing that classical music to kids.
Sunday, Aug. 15 was the first ever Classical Kids Fair in the Bronx. The musical event took place at Bronx Park where there were live musical performances and workshops. There was even an instrument "petting zoo" where kids could try out new instruments.
Organizers say the event is a way to bring an often-forgotten genre to a new generation. It was completely free and sponsored by WQXR, New York's classical radio station. Those in attendance say it's also important for kids in the Bronx to see performers who look like them.
Along with WQXR, the event was a collaboration between the Bronx Art Ensemble, the Bronx Children's Museum, Bronx House, Bronx Opera, and Bronx Heritage Music Center.
