A Bronx man is free after his case went back and forth in the courts for more than two decades.
Andre Bown was convicted of attempted murder in a 1999 case and sentenced to 40 years in prison. In 2022, Brown's conviction was overturned on a technicality and he was released after serving 23 years.
Last year, a judge reinstated Brown's conviction, which put the father and husband at risk of going back to prison.
Brown was resentenced Monday to time served, which allows him to go home to his family and put the case behind him.
"What happened today freed my soul," said Brown. "It has been a journey that we were tried and tested and battle scarred, but we are looking to win the war now."
Brown has maintained his innocence, despite his attempted murder conviction in a case where two teen boys were shot. His attorneys say they will now fight to have that conviction vacated.
"We are going to continue to look for legal avenues that are available to him to finally and fully exonerate him and vindicate him," said Oscar Michelen.
