News 12 is spotlighting one organization in New York City this Global Recycling Day for empowering people to build sustainable futures.
Global Recycling Day was started by the Global Recycling Foundation in 2018. It's a way to bring awareness and to encourage others to help build a more sustainable planet. The Hope Program is dedicated to doing just that.
"Recycling does not only necessarily mean getting your cans or sorting your cans from your bottles to paper. It just doesn't only stop there. It's all about sustainability and energy efficiency, which is what the whole program does," says Nichola Ramchurjee, project manager at Cool Roofs Program.
Cool Roofs, Intervine and Sustainable South Bronx are just a few of their programs that provide training and job programs for people from all backgrounds. They're designed to make the city cleaner and greener.
Officials say their programs provide jobs maintaining parks, building green roofs, creating rain gardens and planting trees. They're all aimed at creating a more energy-saving, environmentally friendly community that's working to tackle climate change in their own backyard.
The Hope Program says it is continually offering job training and placement to New Yorkers on a rotating basis.
