Bronx residents walked to raise awareness for Alzheimer's disease at Orchard Beach Saturday morning.
Regional Aid for Interim Needs (R.A.I.N) hosted the second annual Alzheimer's Walk.
The organization gives caregivers tools and resources to help those fighting the disease. They provide everything from homecare services to housing and food for those who suffer from the most common cause of dementia.
Alzheimer's disease is currently ranked as the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, but recent estimates suggest that the disease may move up to the third, according to the National Institute on Aging.
Experts say more than 5.5 million Americans suffer from the disease. The Alzheimer's Association reports that approximately 200,000 people under the age of 65 have early-onset Alzheimer's.
"The community has a long way to go to gain more understanding about this disease," said Dr. Anderson Torres, President and CEO of RAIN Total Care.
There is currently no cure for the disease but researchers are working to figure out how Alzheimer's affects the brain to develop treatment options that slow the worsening of symptoms.
