A woman died after a Saturday night hit-and-run in Sunset Park, according to police.
Highway Collision Squad identified the woman as 75-year-old Judith Byron.
Police said they are searching for a silver Toyota SUV. The driver of the SUV allegedly ran a red light and hit Byron on the corner of East 41st St. and 7th Avenue.
She was taken to Maimonides Medical Center with trauma throughout her body and was pronounced dead at the hospital.
News 12 spoke with Byron’s husband, Henry Byron. He said they were married for over 50 years. He described her as being loved so deeply.
“She was a good mother, she was a good grandmother, she would take care of my granddaughter every day, five days a week,” he said.
Community members said Judith Byron was a "light in the neighborhood," and added she will be missed very much. She was a known dog owner who always stopped to smile and get to know her neighbors.
The crash has caused people to be fearful in a neighborhood that they otherwise thought was safe.
“We think about this as being a super safe place and we let our kids go to and from the park all the time. And it's just really shocking that this would happen,” said Madeline Borrelli, a neighbor of the Byron family.
