Family and friends of a Brownsville man whom police say was killed in a hit-and-run came together Friday to celebrate what would have been his 73rd birthday.
Police say Larry Maxwell was crossing Sutter Avenue near Osborn Street on Saturday evening when a speeding driver struck another vehicle. That vehicle then hit Maxwell, according to police.
The driver drove off before police arrived.
Police say Maxwell later died at Brookdale Hospital.
Loved ones told News 12 Maxwell was a friend, grandfather, and so much more. They listened at the gathering to a playlist of Maxwell's favorite songs, embraced each other, and released balloons in his memory.
Larry's oldest brother John Maxwell told News 12 it's an unimaginable loss.
“Everybody loved him...Anybody needed something, he’d give it to them. That’s the kind of person he was. He loved everybody," John Maxwell said.
The NYPD says no arrests have been made as of Friday evening.
