Dozens gathered at St. Mary's Park in Mott Haven on Friday for the "Plant for Peace" event held in honor of Gun Violence Awareness Day.

Rows of plants and orange flowers were put into the ground at a water splash pad in the park.

The color orange was chosen because it represents gun violence awareness.

The event was hosted by Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark, who said the flowers will do more than beautify the park.

"If people care about where they live, they want it clean, they want it safe," she said. "They're going to do want to make sure they take care of it. And they're aware of those people who don't belong."

Heather Guerino was there to plant flowers in honor of her nephew Jonathan Cameron who was shot to death last Fourth of July and Kyhara Tay, an 11-year-old girl from Longwood killed in 2021 by a stray bullet.

"The youth in our community sees that there is positive art work in their community it will make them feel positive inside," she said.
