Cyber Monday is here and offers sales and deals for everything – including lithium-ion batteries that are rechargeable and used for e-bikes, vapes, and more.
The FDNY is reminding New Yorkers to make sure the batteries they’re buying are legitimate. With companies like Renogy and Dakota Lithium offering sales up to 60% off for refurbished batteries, city fire officials warn that those can be more dangerous.
“Make sure that it’s certified by a national recognized testing laboratory,” said an FDNY representative. “Only use the manufacturer’s power cords or batteries made specifically for the device.”
According to the FDNY, lithium-ion batteries are responsible for over 200 fires in New York City this year, including one that burned down Concourse Food Plaza and has harmed the surrounding businesses.

For those purchasing lithium-ion batteries on sale, the FDNY also reminds owners to not charge them near exits or anything flammable to keep yourself and others safe.
