The FDNY is issuing a reminder of the potential fire risks for those celebrating Christmas with a real tree or an artificial one.
Here are some tips the FDNY says will be helpful when it comes to decorating for the holiday.
First off, do not use lighted candles or other flaming devices on or near the tree.
Secondly, use decorations made with flame-resistant, flame-retardant or non-combustible materials.
Another tip to keep in mind is to unplug those tree lights when out of the room and before going to sleep.
The FDNY says trees should always be placed at least three feet away from heating system air registers, fireplaces and other heat sources.
Lastly, try to position the tree near an electrical outlet to minimize the use of extension cords.
