Floral Park residents are raising concerns over a proposed apartment development project that they say could significantly change the character of their village.
The project, discussed during a recent public hearing, includes two five-story apartment buildings and a large off-street parking lot. One building would be a 119-unit mixed-use complex on Jericho Turnpike at the former site of Stella’s Restaurant, a longtime local landmark. The second proposal calls for a 36-unit senior apartment building between Van Buren Avenue and Van Siclen Avenue.
In total, the development would include 244 off-street parking spaces.
Opposition to the plan has been growing, with residents organizing a petition that has gathered more than 1,200 signatures. Many who spoke out say their concerns go beyond this single project, pointing to a recent surge in apartment construction throughout Floral Park.
"The traffic study only looked at Jericho Turnpike. Did you consider the work it will take to get across town when Jericho becomes congested," asked Jackie O'Donohue at the meeting.
Residents worry the pace of development could strain local infrastructure and alter the small-community feel that defines the village.
The proposal remains under review.
