Two Bronx sisters who tragically died after drowning on Coney Island Friday will be laid to rest this week.
The funeral service for sisters Zainab and Aisha Mohammad will take place Tuesday at the Yankasa Masjid Mosque at 9:30 a.m. Family, friends and members of the Mount Hope community will gather as they continue mourning the life of the 17 and 18-year-old girls who died.
Police say at around 8 p.m. Friday, the sisters were swimming at Stillwell & Boardwalk West on Coney Island when they disappeared. A relative of theirs told News 12 they were at the beach that day with six of their cousins.
About an hour later, NYPD divers removed them both from the water. The two girls were then rushed to Coney Island Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
As more people flock to beaches to keep cool in the heat this week, everyone should prioritize safety.
Lifeguard shortages are still affecting New York City. A Parks Department spokesperson says they only have 750 of the 1,000 guards needed to fully staff city beaches and pools. The Parks Department are adding more guards every day so staffing numbers will continue to increase.
Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. If you do not see one on duty in your section, do not get in the water.
