Mayor Zohran Mamdani has responded to the remarks President Donald Trump made on the city's emergency snow shoveling program in his State of the Union address. Mamdani said "he appreciated the focus on the program."
President Trump critiqued the program for the controversial requirement of two IDs to be able to sign up.
When asked about the criticism, the mayor said “It is a program that has existed for years. It is a program that has been a part of responses to storms. It's also, however, been a conversation that has been helpful sharing the fact that New Yorkers can be a part of this.”
Mayor Mamdani says the result of the focus led to over 1,400 New Yorkers to sign up for the first. In additional he credited the emergency snow shovelers for assisting DSNY efforts of clearing 16,00 crosswalks, 4,166 hydrants and close to 7,00 bus stops.
The mayor also said “I'll keep the conversations I have with the president private. I will tell you however whenever they do happen, they always focus on how to better our city."
