The Firefighters Association of the State of New York says Long Island and the state are in desperate need of volunteers.
The group held a meeting Saturday in Albertson to draw attention to the problem. It said New York had the most fire-related deaths in the nation last year with 154 fatalities.
"It's getting to be a crisis. It's getting to the point where volunteer fire departments are having a hard time recruiting members and getting people there. They have to come up with incentives, FASNY is coming up with incentives for them to be able to get people to join the volunteer fire services," said Eugene Perry, first vice president of FASNY.
FASNY encourages anyone who is interested in answering the call to stop by their local fire department.
