Local leaders are calling for improvements at the Hamilton Avenue and Court Street intersection after a 31-year-old man was struck and killed last Wednesday.
Officials say the city’s Crash Mapper shows there have been 35 injuries and 24 crashes at the intersection. Officials sent a letter to the Department of Transportation detailing the dangers of the intersection.
Police continue to look for the driver in connection to the incident that claimed the life of 31-year-old Imorne Horton.
His family was joined by Councilmember Brad Lander and Assemblymember Jo Anne Simon at the intersection Friday calling for justice.
Pedestrians voiced that the intersection is dangerous due to the street's width. They say there isn’t enough time to cross and that the crosswalk markings and other safety measures should be improved.
A DOT spokesperson tells News 12,“DOT takes every fatality on our roadways seriously, and we are deeply sorry for this family's loss. We have a proactive program of redesigning streets to reduce tragedies like this one, and as with all locations where a fatal crash occurs, DOT will evaluate the design of the street and the circumstances of the crash to make the appropriate safety enhancements, if feasible. Regarding the traffic stats, in 2020, there were zero fatalities at this site and zero pedestrian and bike injuries. There were six motor vehicle occupants injuries in 2020.”
