More buses in the Bronx are now equipped with cameras that will ticket drivers who are blocking or double parking in bus lanes.
The Bx28, Bx35 and Bx38 bus lines have been added to a fleet of more than 600 buses equipped with automatic camera enforcement.
The MTA says the enforcement is to help increase bus lane speeds, reduce collisions and improve emissions. Since enforcement began, data shows there has been a 5% increase in bus speeds on enforcement routes and a 20% reduction in collisions.
Drivers in violation of bus lane rules will be given a warning in the first 60 days, after summons will be issued starting at $50 and up to $250 for repeat violators.
Bus riders in Norwood said cars that block the bus lane usually delay their commute.
“It causes congestion, so if it’s going to deter them for doing it then yea,” said Eddie who rides the bus.
While some drivers say it’s a struggle to find a place to pull over if you are dropping someone off.
“It’s another way for the city to get money out of us,” said Charles.
