Officials say they found the remains of a man who was missing for hours after a house fire on Sunset Avenue in Island Park.
Neighbors say they were shocked by the sight of the man's home engulfed in flames. They say the man lived there for decades.
"He was really nice and it's just really devastating to see," said Kayla Chin, of Island Park.
Fire officials say the call came in just before 2 a.m. Monday morning. About 120 firefighters from 10 different departments responded.
"There was a lot of devastation to the house, there was a whole collapse of the second floor," said Nassau Chief Fire Marshal Michael Utarro.
Investigators spent the day looking for the missing homeowner. At around 7 p.m. Monday, Utarro confirmed with News 12 they found the missing man's remains in the destroyed home.
A former neighbor who knew the victim came by to see the house.
"A nice guy a lot of people liked him in the neighborhood he was really, really nice, and it's such a sad shame what's going on," said Linda Aksnes, of Oceanside.
The home next door also suffered damaged.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire marshal says it is not considered suspicious.
