Black Restaurant Week in the tri-state area kicked off this weekend, and more than 100 eateries in the region are taking part.
Brown Butter Craft & Bar Kitchen in Bedford–Stuyvesant is just one of 50 restaurants in Brooklyn participating in the event.
Black Restaurant Week is a 10-day showcase celebrating Black-owned restaurants, which are offering special menus for customers for the duration of the event. This is the first year that it's being hosted in the region.
Organizers say it started in 2016 as a way to help drive business into Black-owned restaurants across the country.
With the pandemic this year, they say they're even more excited to be able to help promote the businesses, many of which have been trying to stay afloat. Myriam Nicolas, the owner of Brown Butter Craft & Bar Kitchen, says this is her first time participating in Black Restaurant Week.
After closing briefly during the pandemic, she says she's hoping the platform will help her business continue to grow. "Visibility is key at this time, and then these type of things really do help to promote our businesses," Nicolas says. "These opportunities are exactly the type of thing we need to bring more people into our businesses." Black Restaurant Week will be going on until Nov. 22.
