The New York City Department of Parks and Recreation held a
park cleanup and Black History Month event in Brooklyn Saturday to honor the
late Hattie Carthan.
Volunteers at Herbert Von King Park called Carthan an
environmental icon who helped build the Bed-Stuy community before her death in
the late 1980s.
A garden in the park has since been named after her. The
space hosts a farmer’s market every weekend during the summer.
During the cleanup event, a full truck load of trash was
picked up by the volunteers.
