The Department of City Planning has launched a community survey to get an understanding of residents' needs to help transform the South Bronx.

It will also seek to restore local businesses and increase pedestrian safety, especially along the Sheridan Expressway.

In November, the Planning Department launched the Southern Boulevard neighborhood study, to get an inside look at residents' concerns.

From many homeless people on the streets to not enough affordable housing and subways with escalators, many Bronx residents are asking for improvements.

"The study is going to access the needs of the community, and the best way to access the needs is coming into the community and asking them what they want, how can we better improve this area," says Councilman Rafael Salamanca.

The Planning Department says it will look at where it can change zoning to build more affordable housing.

The study will help provide affordable housing, increase pedestrian-friendly crossing points, improve parks, restore local businesses, and provide better services for struggling neighborhoods of Longwood, Crotona Park East and other areas in the South Bronx.
