A 14-year-old girl remains in critical condition after police say she was shot Friday in the City of Newburgh.
Officials say the girl was gunned down at approximately 8:30 p.m. in front of 119 South St., outside of The Living in Jesus Ministry and near two other churches. It’s not clear if the teen was intentionally shot or accidentally struck by gunfire.
“It’s no good but I’m telling you, last year was worse,” says longtime resident Soraya Rosario.
Neighbors who News 12 spoke to say they thought the inner-city block was safer than in years’ past.
“It’s a little noisy on the block but as far as the violence, I’m astonished. I can’t believe that happened,” says Sharay Garcia, who moved to Newburgh last year.
Authorities say first responders worked to save the teen who was then rushed to St. Luke’s Hospital where she remains fighting for her life. So far, no arrests have been made.
“My prayers are with her family. God bless her. I hope she pulls through,” says Rosario.
City of Newburgh police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 845-569-7573.
