Suffolk police say two men were shot in a Port Jefferson
Village parking lot early Saturday morning – the second shooting in the quaint
seaside area in less than three months.
The incident happened outside a bar around 2 a.m. Witnesses
told News 12 that a fight escalated and several shots rang out.
Police say a 20-year-old and a 22-year-old are being treated
for serious injuries.
No arrests have been made.
In March, a 25-year-old was fatally shot on Main Street
during the day after an argument. There were also two recent violent attacks at
the nearby Greenway Trail that stretches from Setauket to Port Jefferson
Station.
Mayor Margo Garent says she has zero tolerance for the
recent gun violence. She added that she's prepared to put certain protocols in
place to make sure the village stays safe.
The mayor says the State Liquor Authority currently allows
bars in the village to stay open until 4 a.m. She may ask the state to impose
an earlier curfew.
She also says she extended the hours of her village
constables from midnight until 2 a.m. They were the first to respond to the
shooting and help one of the victims. Workers at nearby Tommy's Place helped
the other victim until ambulances and Suffolk police arrived.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident
to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
