Police say a 36-year-old was shot and killed on Carlton Avenue and Pacific Street, just blocks from her home around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The victim has been identified as Tamika Powell, a mother to two young girls.
Loved ones say Powell had attended a gathering near her home when a confrontation broke out between her and a man.
Her mother, Norma Campbell, says that after Powell left the party, the man returned to his apartment, put on a mask and followed her.
“He went into his apartment, came back with a mask, and left in the direction Tamika had gone,” Campbell told News 12.
Witnesses say the suspect and Powell exchanged a few final words before she turned to walk away — and was then shot once in the head.
Campbell remembered her daughter as a free spirit.
“She did whatever she wanted to do — no apologies, no regrets,” Campbell said. “But she had a big heart. A big, big heart.”
