Suffolk Police say the man accused of firing a gun inside
the LA Fitness in North Babylon was arrested.
Police say the incident actually started around 7:15 p.m. when Haynes and another teen got into an argument in the gym and staff told Haynes to leave.
When Haynes tried to get away, police say three people inside the gym held him down while someone called police. During that struggle police say Haynes fired his gun.
No one was hit by a bullet.
The shooting comes as violence has spiked across Long Island. In Suffolk, there has been a 13.4% increase in shooting incidents involving injury and a 13% increase in Nassau from 2020 to 2021.
Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder says the violence has a lot to do with mental health and gangs.
The 17-year-old victim was treated at the hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening.
According to court documents, Haynes told detectives after the shooting that the gun was in the pocket of his hoodie and he “doesn’t know” how it went off when he was tackled to the ground.
