Four Essex County residents are facing charges for their alleged roles in a luxury car theft ring.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office says that the ring leaders usually sent four or five teens from northern New Jersey into quiet neighborhoods in Monmouth County to steal expensive cars.
Authorities released surveillance video from earlier this year that shows one of the attempted thefts.
Prosecutors say that on Sunday a Maserati drove around Marlboro and that several men got out and tried to get inside of parked cars. A few hours later, Freehold Township police saw the same car. When they attempted to pull the Maserati over, police say that the driver took off and eventually crashed. The four men inside were then arrested.
The men are facing burglary and resisting arrest charges. The getaway driver is facing additional charges, according to officials.
Police say that one of the ways that car owners can keep their vehicles safe is to keep them locked and to keep key fobs inside of the home, away from the vehicle.
