Tenants protest lack of gas for 8 months
Tenants who have lived without gas to cook in their apartments for about eight months protested on Friday.
Chanting and banging buckets while holding signs, the residents rallied outside their building at 2076 Creston Ave. They demanded action.
"They supplied us with hot plates," said Michael Arce, who moved into the building four months ago. He said he has never had gas in his apartment. "A hot plate doesn't do nothing but warm up food." Other tenants agreed, saying it takes too long to cook a meal using hot plates.
The building has nearly 200 violations, according to city records. The building's landlord, Abraham Rosenstock, was named one of the city's worst landlords in a list compiled by the office of Public Advocate Letitia James.
"When you have landlords that are irresponsible, that are disrespectful to tenants, the best way to get them to do anything is to do it with a collective action," said Democratic state Sen. Gustavo Rivera, who attended the protest.
Activists are helping residents form a tenants' association to try and address issues at the building.
News 12 is awaiting a response from the landlord.
