The owner of the
Bronx day care and another man are facing federal charges following the
death of a child. Police say a third suspect is still on the loose.
According to the NYPD, the suspects are now looking at 20 years to life behind bars after the U.S. State Attorney’s Office revealed details from the official criminal complaint. The document claimed that from at least July to September of 2023, they planned to distribute fentanyl from that day care despite the presence of children.
Investigators found 1 kilogram of fentanyl on top of play mats where those children were sleeping Friday afternoon, along with three kilo presses, devices commonly used by drug traffickers to package narcotics.
In addition to the more than 10 state level charges already stacked against Grei Mendez and Carlisto Acevedo Brito, the pair are facing federal charges that include conspiracy to distribute narcotics among other charges. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison and a minimum sentence of 20 years.
The third suspect, and co-conspirator that police are looking for, is the husband of the day care owner and cousin of the other man.
