Young women all around the city are excited and setting their sights high after being inspired by Vice President Kamala Harris’ historic inauguration Wednesday.
When Heather White and her 10-year-old daughter Lola sat down to watch the inauguration on Wednesday, she says they thought about Election Day four years ago.
“We had such a joyous day voting for what we thought was going to be the first female president. She and I dressed up in matching pant suits in the schoolyard, and we were in the schoolyard turning cartwheels celebrating the fact of being a woman and having a future female president. As we all know, that didn’t happen,” said White.
She says her daughter never lost hope and asked her mother if she could wear her blazer to school the next day.
“For her 10th birthday she just had in November, it said Lola Derris for president on the top of her cake. And she has continued with that idea and now said she wants to be the first queer president,” said White.
Lola Derris was not the only young lady in our city who was excited to watch Vice President Kamala Harris make history.
Heather Pacheco, 9, says it makes a difference to see someone who looks like her in the White House.
“That just really makes me feel happy and excited,” said Pacheco.
The young ladies tell News 12 the vice president is their role model -- someone who's showing them that they can achieve anything they want in life.
