After the rise in anti-Asian violence, parents are calling for more education on Asian American history and culture.
An open letter was sent to the city’s Department of Education, which was signed by more than 2,500 parents.
Parents say they want changes in the curriculum because they believe a lot of the recent hate stems from not understanding Asian culture.
They’re demanding that the DOE “take immediate actions to establish and promote a curriculum that is inclusive of Asian American history and culture.”
In a statement, the DOE says it provides high-quality, culturally responsive curricula and “remain committed to making sure our Asian American and Pacific Islander students see themselves and their peers in the books in their education.”
The DOE did not mention any changes that would be happening in the future.
