Bedford Park residents still reeling from gas explosion

Residents were forced to evacuate, watching in fear as firefighters battled the smoke-filled streets. Some are now concerned about the health impacts of the gas exposure.

Nearly two weeks after a gas explosion rocked Bedford Park Boulevard, residents are still feeling its effects.
Sloane Prosper, who lives next to the gas leak, recalled, “I heard an explosion outside of my window. The first thing I thought was, ‘Oh, my God, someone bombed us.”
Residents were forced to evacuate, watching in fear as firefighters battled the smoke-filled streets. Some are now concerned about the health impacts of the gas exposure.
Jose Rivera said, “We don’t know what effect that might have… if that’s going to take effect down the line.”
“Every time I cough, my whole chest kind of really tightens up,” said Prosper. She says she plans to take legal action for her and her neighbors’ experience.
Con Edison has yet to determine the cause of the explosion.
