Bronx
Borough President Vanessa Gibson rallied outside Bronx Borough Hall with
community members and health advocates in support of the ongoing fight against
women’s rights.
This
comes as the Supreme Court’s historical decision to overturn Roe v. Wade continues
to send waves of shock across our city.
“For
50 years, women in this country and birthing individuals have had a fundamental
right to access reproductive health care,” said Gibson. “Abortion care
is health care.”
A
growing concern has emerged for families in lower-income and minority
communities that don’t have resources to travel to have safe abortions.
New
York is one of three states that recently passed legislation to require
Medicaid to pay for abortion services. It is also one of six states that requires
insurance companies to include coverage for abortion in at least some of their
insurance plans.
This
Supreme Court decision has incited fears of future repercussions for other
things, like access to contraception for women.
