A longtime Claremont family is calling for justice after 43-year-old Kelvin Mitchell was killed in a hit-and-run during the early morning hours of Saturday, May 10. His mother celebrated her first Mother’s Day without him on Sunday.
Police say a black Mercedes-Benz hit Mitchell as he was in the crosswalk on Webster Avenue between East 168th Street and East 169th Street outside the Webster Houses where he’d lived for years. The tragedy happened near several cross streets that the city considers “priority corridors” and “priority intersections” under its Vision Zero initiative. These are areas where city data shows the highest concentration of pedestrians killed or severely injured. Mitchell’s name has now been added to that list.
Surveillance video shows a black vehicle speeding down the street at around 12:41 a.m. with what appears to be an NYPD vehicle following close behind - just minutes before Mitchell was hit. The NYPD says the driver who hit Mitchell did not stay at the scene.
Mitchell’s family describes him as a bubbly person who loved his family. He leaves behind three adult children and a new grandchild who his loved ones say he’ll never get to see grow up.
Anyone with any information is asked to call the NYPD Crime Stoppers tip line confidentially at 1-800-577-TIPS.
