Police say 42-year-old Jamel McGriff has been taken into custody in connection for a double murder in Bellerose, Queens.
Police say McGriff was living at a men's shelter on Creston Avenue in the Bronx and has a long arrest record for robbery and failing to register as a sex offender. NYPD officers with the Department of Homeless Services were seen going in and out of the building on Wednesday afternoon.
He was last seen on video camera as he attempted to pawn two cellphones on Fordham Road on Tuesday.
McGriff is wanted for murder, robbery and arson. Investigators say McGriff approached a home on Monday along 254 street in Queens asking to use a phone charger. Video surveillance obtained by the NYPD shows McGriff interacting with the victim around 10 a.m. Monday, entering the backyard of the home with the victim and going inside.
Roughly five hours later, McGriff left the home, as smoke began to billow inside the house.
The 76-year-old victim, Frank Olton, was found stabbed multiple times and tied to a pole in the basement. His wife, 77-year-old Maureen Olton, was found on the first floor severely burned.
McGriff's floormate says he last saw him leave the shelter on Monday, but it was unclear where he was going.
"I've interacted with him a couple times, I've talked with him he doesn't really talk much, he doesn't say much, he would just sleep here and leave, that was really it, you could tell a lot of people in here, they are in here for a reason," said a man who identified himself as a resident of the Creston Avenue Men's shelter.
The NYPD says there is no connection between McGriff and the victims. Their cause of death is under investigation.
