The Department of Transportation announced on Tuesday that the largest-ever Open Streets initiative in history will be taking over the five boroughs on Earth Day, April 20.
The DOT says that its annual car-free Earth Day will be the biggest yet. Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez says that the city-wide celebration will include 54 car-free streets and plazas to encourage New Yorkers to use public transportation, walk or bike instead of drive.
"When you bike it's good for your economy, you save money, it's good for your environment, and if you bike half-an-hour every day, you extend six years to your life," said Rodriguez.
