A group of education advocates are calling on the mayor to include more money for public schools in the city budget after he unveiled his plans to cut nearly $1 billion from the Department of Education.
The group rallied on the steps of DOE headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday.
They are calling for equity in education following plans by Mayor Eric Adams to cut the school budget by nearly $1 billion.
The group is demanding for the city to invest in students, giving them resources like more social workers, smaller class sizes and integrated schools.
The rally comes just a day after Schools Chancellor David Banks pledged to fix what he calls a dysfunctional school system by prioritizing wellness programs and giving students post-grad opportunities.
Demonstrators are hoping to transform the city’s school system to create a better future for students.
News 12 reached out to the mayor’s office for comment on the rally and hasn’t heard back yet.
