Elected leaders joined the Melrose Environmental Awareness Committee for a tour of an area they say is contaminated, posing a health threat to Bronx neighbors.
The committee says toxic chemicals from a former dry cleaning site in the neighborhood have been a lingering health threat to the community for years.
Thursday’s tour called for awareness and action – local organizations joined elected leaders and representatives from the state Department of Environmental Conservation to call for transparency on this issue they say could negatively impact hundreds of people.
The DEC says it is working closely with the Department of Health and has completed several investigations to identify the extent of the contamination.
