It could cost Long Islanders more to stay warm as home heating oil prices are on the rise.
The cost of home heating oil on Long Island has more than doubled from 2021.
Vice President of Baldwin-based AJC Plumbing and Heating Eric Scigliano says anyone trying to make the transition from oil to gas isn't going to see a cheap change.
"As much as they want to convert, I give people price and they're like, 'That's a lot,' and I'm like, 'That's what it these days,'" Scigliano says
According to the New York state Energy Research and Development Authority, the average cost to heat out a Long Island home a week ago was $6.07 a gallon.
Analysts say prices are expected to get higher than that.
Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that eligible households can receive up to $976 in heating assistance for the winter.
The federal funded program called the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) is designed to help low- and middle-income people keep their homes warm and offset energy costs.
Scigliano says the help is needed as some of his customers tell him they will keep their heat lower because they can't afford the high heating oil prices.
He says anyone who does switch to natural gas to save money need to factor in the changing cost of oil.
