Temperatures are anticipated to drop and fast, mechanics say there’s a few key things to check on under your car if you haven’t already.

“First thing we check is your antifreeze. Antifreeze goes bad between three to five years,” said David Lawlor, at Shufelt’s Garage in Norwalk.

Antifreeze is a liquid that helps regulate your engine during extreme temperatures.

Next, is your battery. Lawlor says that the lower the temperatures, the harder it is for batteries to do their job.

“The first real cold day, your car won’t start, so it’s better to be proactive and change the battery, like this guy he just changed his battery so he’s going to be OK,” said Lawlor.

Lastly, check your tires to make sure the threading will get safely through snow, rain and slush.

Lawlor says all season tires can do the job but if it’s a bad winter, he recommends snow tires as something to think about.

“Snow tires are made one time a year and when the manufacturers run out of snow tires, they run out of snow tires for the whole year. So it’s good to get your snow tires in the beginning of the year,” said Lawlor.
