A judge has put on hold the plan by the Department of Education (DOE) to cut some school bus routes in the Bronx and the city.

Ten private bus companies had filed a lawsuit to stop the DOE?s plan that would strand about 10,000 students. The DOE had defended its move by saying the cuts would save about $20 million a year. The proposal required students to register if they wanted bus service. However, only 63 percent of kids had registered.

The DOE says while it does not agree with the judge?s ruling, it will stop the plan to cut bus routes. According to the bus companies, up to 250 routes would be eliminated by the plan. The next hearing is scheduled for December 1.
