Kids in Westchester’s largest city got free sneakers on Monday, just in time for the holidays.
For Miley Segar, her new pink sneakers are a highlight of the holidays.
"When I put the new sneakers on, it felt so comfortable," says Segar.
She got them for free at the sneaker give-back event on School Street in Yonkers. It was hosted by Ready For A Change and Lozo Couture.
Right after putting them on her feet, Segar already had a list of everything she was excited to do. "I'm excited to go to school in them," she says. "And run in it and so many things to do."
Segar isn't the only one.
"I have a whole bunch of grandkids, and this helps out a lot for Christmas," says Renee Jones, a grandparent picking up shoes.
The sneaker donations came from Shoes That Fit.
They gave out about 300 pairs of sneakers. "It's rough times for a lot of people so people need stuff like this and who are we to sit back and do nothing when we're from here and went through the same thing," says Lorenzo Johnson, an organizer of the event.
For the organizers, this means more to them than just giving out sneakers. They're giving back to the community they grew up in. "Now for me to fast forward and bring good and do good and give back, I feel honored to do it," says Jason Robinson, an organizer of the event.
The hope from organizers and families is that it will be all smiles from kids this holiday season.
"The grandkids are going to be so excited and happy," says Jones.
