A beloved Montefiore NICU nurse saw a familiar face while working her final shift at the hospital Wednesday.
After caring for babies at Montefiore Weiler Hospital for over 30 years, Doreen Ciborowski retired Wednesday night.
"I might cry, I might hang out for a couple of hours tonight; it might be hard to leave," Ciborowski said. "But overall, I feel like it’s going to start a new journey for me."
Before she exits the NICU, a familiar face from the past came to wish her farewell.
Catherine was born 18 years ago at the hospital at 25 weeks and weighing 1 pound. As an infant, Catherine stayed at the hospital for nearly six months because she needed breathing eating support and several surgeries.
Now healthy and heading into her senior year of high school, Catherine volunteers in the NICU and got to see her former caretaker on her last day.
"To see Catherine come in after eighteen years, this is a first." Ciborowski says. "It’s the best present anyone could give me, especially on my last day of work.”
Ciborowski says she plans on being adventurous after retiring, including taking a trip to Honduras to go zip-lining.
