A small library is set to make a big impact in the Fords community.

The Bold Impact Book Nook officially opened Saturday on Liberty Street to give neighbors a new place to pick up a book, share a story and connect with others.

The idea grew from a Little Free Library that needed some tender loving care. Members of the Bold Book Club NY/NJ and community volunteers helped to restore the space, with support from the Woodbridge Public Library and Little Free Library.

"We decided that we wanted to bring our love of books to our local community and we hope that we can get more free libraries around New York and New Jersey," said Lakisha Adams, founder of Bold Book Club NY/NJ.

The Book Nook has also taken Little Free Library’s Read in Color pledge, with a commitment to making books that represent different voices, cultures, identities and experiences accessible to readers of all ages.

Organizers said their love of books inspired them to bring the project to their own community, with hopes of eventually seeing more free libraries throughout New York and New Jersey.

For children, organizers said the goal is also to make reading a part of their everyday lives and help build skills that can benefit them as they grow.

The concept is simple: take a book, leave a book.

"I think is really important that our children learn, especially as they matriculate through school," said Alisha Damon, who attended the event. "Going to college, reading is really important and so, practicing now and getting them involved in reading really sets them up for their future."

Many residents came out for Saturday’s ribbon cutting and first book swap and brought books to exchange and to celebrate the new neighborhood resource.
